Mnstf Picnic today Note: There are reports predicting rain for this afternoon and evening. I have a pavilion-style tent (for outdoor craft shows) that I could bring if I can get a little help getting it into and out of the car (it's heavy). Anyone live near me? Matt & Kelly?
Anyone else with similar shelters?

Hidden Minneapolis: Latino Mural Wow, I've been so busy with convention galleries and such that I hope I remember where these are from. Off Lake Street, next to the Taco Bell between 1st and 2nd Sts, near where 35W goes over Lake, across the street from the McDonalds. That whole area has a bunch of murals and this one is on the same block as as the arabic mural, the Roundup/Irish Too signs and the parking lot mural from previous Hidden Minneapolis posts.
left section of Latino Mural in South Minneapolis, 6/6/08
right section of Latino Mural in South Minneapolis, 6/6/08 The area on the South side of Lake from 1st St. to 4th is rife with building art. More later.

Minn-StF Picnic on Saturday The Minn-StF Picnic is this Saturday (July 19th) at Minnehaha Park in picnic area #2 (between Godfrey Pkwy and Nawadaha Blvd). Here is a link to a map of the park (it's a PDF); there's also a map in the Minicon 43 program book. The picnic will start at 2pm and run until dark (around 9pm). There will be a grill going for anyone who wants to grill something (bring your own food to grill). Minn-StF will provide some beverages and snacks, we encourage you to bring some food to share. There will be game playing, so feel free to bring table games or outdoor games. Later in the evening some of us will take a walk down to the falls. We recommend that people show up closer to 2pm for this event than they normally would for a Minn-StF meeting!

Media Watch Quick take on The Dark Knight:
Not for the faint of heart.
You don't need to stay, there's nothing after the credits. The Sci-Fi Channel is running Joan of Arcadia starting last week. The first season was great. I'm hoping it will cut the dystopian edge off my mood from Batman. If you've never seen the show, watch the listings. The two best (imrho) are where G_d asks her to join the cheerleading squad, and for her to hold a yard sale. Some of the best tv ever. It was so good, they felt compelled to change it in the second season, ruining it and driving it to cancellation.
Starting this week are new episodes of Monk and Psych. Psych is fun but fluff; Monk varies considerably but is always well done and occasionally brilliant.

The Dark Knight When I read Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” in the late ‘80s, I was struck by the vivid and unrealistic dystopia it portrayed: here was a society wherein every idiot had an equal chance of getting airtime for his ill-considered worldview and wherein the media chose to expound not the most true or even most relevant of these, but the most shocking.
20 years later, we live in that society.
( Cut for the really slim possibility that you consider the things in this movie review to be spoliers. I don't think they are, but YMMV. )

Friends of huladavid He just posted this comment to my post, so maybe he'll make his own post soon:
"Thanks for the good wishes everyone, and Carol, thanks for posting this. Basically it looks like I had a viral infection, with a kick-up of my gall-blader. What worried me the most was that my kidneys hurt, but they're not involved."

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/44675271/3130497) [Link] | Pretty vivid dreams last night. Went to bed at 11pm - the festivities surrounding 30 people repairing a space tower in Eve pretty much crumbled when half the fleet fucked off to go watch the new Batman movie.
(In fact, they were trying like mad to find anyone competent to lead shit. Failing that, they picked on me. 'Come on, it's Goonfleet Affirmative Action! We need a woman FC' (I still refused)).
Dreams. Huge, huge old house. Alot like my friend from 8th grade's rambling homemade monstrosity - they designed it themselves as a whimsy house. Built it themselves. Level after level of rooms, lofts, interior windows, all coated in beautiful light hardwood. In the dream there were bunkbeds with 5 levels, some of which were waterbeds, some of which were not. There were alot of work people wandering around, all doing their own thing. It was haunted, and a few people (433) were busy trying to stalk the ghosts with some special sort of camera.
Morgan was hanging out in the kitchen. She had a big plastic bucket of random weird looking fish, and was busy trying to show Jason how to remove the fish brains intact using metal spoons. It was for some dish she was making. It was rather nasty. I am glad I can not smell in my dreams....
Most of the dream was just wandering around and exploring the house. Closets full of stuff. the bizarre kitchen with grinders an cupboards full of unlabeled jars.

It breaks my heart to see what we've come to, here in America. That's the last line in a post I made two years ago.
It makes me sick to think how much worse it is today than two years ago.

Social Hung out with my downstairs neighbors a bit last night. We know alot of people in common from the West Bank, although I am woefully out of date on all of the gossip. Guy is a 50 something stage hand, currently sporting a broken ankle. He's stir crazy from not being able to work, so he has been fixing up the yard like a madman. He works hard to drag anyone coming home out to his little patio thing, and we end up chatting where we might not otherwise. Pretty cool dude.
Last night I sat drinking gin and tonics talking about Louisiana, cooking, music (I copied him some of my Russian Ska, and he likes it alot). After a while, came back up to the muggy apartment. Have moved into the 'ok, I am going to be playing Eve in my bra, deal' stage, with Bane, and seems to be no dissent. We still have to find another person for Sept, though. The guy who came by this weekend was a bit hesitant, as it still would mean he has a sucktastic car commute.
Car. Yah. Nothing. Will see if I can line up someone to do car shopping this weekend, I guess. Or perhaps buy a bike. Savings are going well, but I am really antsy to buy the Iceland ticket NOW.

Slow cooker turkey breast You can do a half breast or a whole breast.
Chop up some celery and onion--1/2 cup of each is enough, because they're just for flavoring. Put those and a bay leaf into the breast cavity. (Add other seasonings if you prefer.) Put the breast meaty-side-up into the slow cooker.
Pour over it 1/2 cup or so--not a lot--of chicken or vegetable broth or water with bouillon cube or granules. Salt and pepper if you want--I usually leave salt for the table.
Cook on Low for about 7 hours.
That's it.
Two things about slow cookers: 1. They come in different sizes. They work best if they are approximately one-half to two-thirds full. 2. Some of them seem to have higher Low and High settings than others. You may have to practice a bit with yours.

Slow cooker recipes So many people asked; I will post one now and then when I get to it.
The reason that I was looking for the person I had promised recipes to is that I have a duplicate copy of a slow-cooker cookbook. If that person doesn't remind me in response to this post, I will put the names of all who have asked into a box and draw one.
Slow Cooker Peppers and Steak
This is a very flexible recipe. I'll just give you an idea of what to do.
For 6 people, I use about 3 lbs. of steak, trimmed of as much fat as possible (so the end weight is always quite a bit less!). I use chuck steak, which is usually the cheapest and which takes well to slow cooking.
Cut the steak into strips. They can be neat and uniform or totally diverse; just make them approximately 1/4" thick or so.
Brown the strips in some oil in a skillet. Sprinkle on garlic to taste (or none if you don't like it) as it cooks.
Put some onion in the bottom of the slow cooker: chunks, slices, it doesn't matter, but not diced small. (If you don't like onion, leave it out.) Put the browned strips and all their liquid on top of the onions. If there are bits stuck to the pan, deglaze it with a bit of broth, wine, soy sauce, whatever, and pour that into the slow cooker.
Now, I suggest that even with less meat, you use at least the following amounts; I can't imagine more would hurt.
Mix 1/4 cup soy sauce, ginger (ground or fresh) to taste, 1-2 teaspoons brown sugar, and pepper to taste (fresh-ground if possible). Pour it over the meat.
Cook on Low; I go about 5 hrs., though with less meat you could cut that a bit. Then slice 3 green and/or red peppers; add them and mix it up. (This should be the ONLY time you take off the lid till it's done!) If you like tomatoes, add a 16-oz.can diced tomatoes or some chopped fresh ones. Depending on the amount of meat and what proportion of veg to meat you want, you can vary these quantities, too.
Cook for another hour. Thicken it if you want (you know how to do that, don't you?). Serve on rice or noodles. You can even scoop it without the liquid into tortillas.
Really, you could do almost anything to this in the line of adding seasonings or veg. Experiment. But this is the version everyone in this house will eat, which is good enough for me.

I have said elsewhere I suspect that none of us ever gets through life without some people thinking we're assholes (and us thinking that of some people). No matter what we do, we cannot control what other people think of us; there is no behavior we can exhibit, no way we can live our lives, that guarantees that others will think well of us, or even that they will not think we are assholes. Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Gandhi, any philanthropist or hero or benefactor or saint you can name, all had their detractors.

Awake At 3 fucking ayem. When I wake up (to go to the bathroom, something we old folks have to do in the night) at a certain point in my sleep cycle, everything in the world that there is for me to worry about invades my brain and I can't go back to sleep. This is the only kind of insomnia I ever have, and since I work for myself and I don't have to get up at any particular time to go to work, and it's summer so I don't have to make sure the teen gets to school, I don't have much to complain about. But I'm complaining anyway, ungrateful wretch that I am.
Move along, nothing to see here but a cranky old broad.

At my most ineloquent. I keep opening chat windows to people and not typing anything in them, so maybe I just don't have anything to say.
Patience was put down today. I may have many rats, but she was the rat. She was my rat. It hasn't hit yet. Maybe after I dig the grave. Not ready yet.
I'm driving a rental while the shop fixes my vent/AC issue. Last repair under warranty I'll get, since I'm just about to roll over 50k. Here's hoping it lasts.
Blank It has been running for a month now. It's still languishing in 'nobody knows about it' land, but it has a couple faithful fans, myself among them. I really like it. It makes me laugh. I printed out a strip and put it on my cube wall to commemorate. Narcissism? Who cares, it's funny.
Double XP weekend is creeping up, and outside forces are threatening to take up my time. If I do anything besides karate that weekend, I will do it begrudgingly. Unless I'm fed, I suppose.
Work is kicking my ass. I was there late tonight, and this might be an inescapable trend for awhile. Oh well, at least I like my job.
I'm feeling kinda numb. Maybe I should finish cooking and eat and then sleep.

Splendiferous You know that thing where you're biking next to a lake and it's really hot and there are people swimming in the cool water and you just want to jump off and run into the lake only you don't because you're wearing clothes? No? Well, it happens to me all the time. I've been trying to come up with something I could wear that would make this fantasy feasible. I thought of wearing a swimsuit under my biking clothes, but pedaling in a swimsuit would not be comfortable. Then it occurred to me that there is a goofy sport called Triathlon that involves jumping back and forth between a bike and a lake without stopping to change clothes. Sure enough, it is possible to purchase specialized clothing for the biker who might at any moment become a swimmer (or vice versa, which is the way Triathlons actually work).
Anyway, I found this splendiferous garment online and they even had it in XXL. Not cheap, but just what I wanted. Ordering online is always a crapshoot, but the measurements sounded right so I ordered it. It came and it turned out to fit perfectly. I usually don't have much luck with built-in bras, but this one fits as well as that crazy corset I got at Convergence (same general principle, only with heavy-duty spandex instead of boning). And the front zipper goes down to the waist, making it easy to get on and off. I tried it out on Saturday, undeterred by the 50-mph gusts that turned Lake Calhoun into surf city. Okay, it wasn't the best day for outdoor swimming and the south beach on Lake Calhoun is not the best beach, but the suit worked great!
I was so happy with the fit that I went back to the Danskin site and ordered the matching sports bra. If that works out I can wear it with my bike shorts (and probably a t-shirt on top) for a different approach to the same problem.

More Twin Cities food Already several people have recommended Victor's 1959 Cafe for breakfast. I've tried it. My 17-year-old daughter and her friends love it, but I'm not an enthusiast. I do like the plantains, but otherwise I find the food not very tasty.
A place I do highly recommend is Maria's. http://www.mariascafe.com/ The corn pancakes are to die for.
I was crazy about the veggie omelet at Baja Sol, and it was very reasonably priced, but they've stopped serving breakfast. I still like it for other food; they make the tortillas right then and there, and I like their salsa bar.

Gee, this sounds familiar Sen. John McCain has repeatedly characterized the threat of "radical Islamic extremism" as "the absolute gravest threat . . . that we're in against." Before we simply accept this, we need to examine the nature of the terrorist threat facing our country. If we do so, we will see how we have allowed the specter of that threat to distort our lives and take our treasure. ...
We must not delude ourselves about the nature of the terrorist threat to our country. We must not take fright at the specter our leaders have exaggerated. In fact, we must see jihadists for the small, lethal, disjointed and miserable opponents that they are.
Who would say such a thing? Obviously, some fuzzy-headed liberal who knows nothing about real life.
Uh...no. Glenn L. Carle, a member of the CIA's Clandestine Service for 23 years, who retired in March 2007 as deputy national intelligence officer for transnational threats.

Convergence 2008 Galleries - Preliminary LJ viewing Convergence 2008 Gallery A, leading to three more pages of thumbs, is up. 351 dollops of pure visual heaven, plus thumbnails and (minimal) annotation.
NOT FINISHED, not by a long shot. I've only zipped through the first thumbs page, but at least you can see the pictures and all the links work (I hope). As always, corrections and comments are useful. I don't know a lot of these people, even the ones who posed for me. And I don't know the names of some of the party rooms (like the Egyptian themed party).
I'll be done enough to let Convergence know at some point soon, since there's such a demand. But for now, LJ gets first crack.
Several people have asked for higher res images from various projects. I'll get to them soon.
